What’s a Refrigerated Truck Body?
A refrigerated truck body, sometimes called a reefer body, is the insulated cargo unit fitted to a truck for transporting perishable goods like food and pharmaceuticals. Bodies come in any size, from compact light-truck builds to large pantech and freezer applications. Each is equipped with a refrigeration unit that maintains a controlled temperature inside the cargo area to keep goods fresh in transit.

Types of Refrigerated Truck Bodies
Not every load needs the same setup. The three most common refrigerated truck body types Tranzfreeze fits out are:
Chilled truck bodies (+4 °C to +12 °C)
The standard choice for fresh produce, dairy, meat and pharmaceuticals, anything that needs to stay cold but not frozen. A chilled body pairs with a lighter refrigeration unit and works well for multi-drop metropolitan delivery routes.
Frozen truck bodies (-18 °C to -25 °C)
Built with heavier insulation and paired with a higher-capacity refrigeration unit, frozen truck bodies suit ice-cream distributors, seafood operators, frozen-meal delivery businesses, and cold storage top-ups. These bodies also perform better on long-haul runs where hot ambient temperatures test the unit hardest.
Multi-temp truck bodies
A single refrigerated truck body split into two or three temperature zones using internal bulkheads and separate evaporators. This is the setup for operators who need to carry chilled and frozen product in one delivery run, cafés, supermarkets, catering fleets. Tranzfreeze can spec and install multi-temp systems on any suitable chassis.

How do Refrigerated Trucks Work?
Refrigerated trucks work by using a refrigeration unit to cool the air inside the cargo area. The unit typically consists of:
- a compressor
- a condenser
- an evaporator
- an expansion valve
The compressor compresses refrigerant gas, which then flows through the condenser to release heat and turn into a liquid. The liquid is then passed through an expansion valve where it expands and cools down. This cooled liquid is then circulated through the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the air inside the truck’s cargo area, keeping it at a constant temperature.
Choosing the Right Refrigerated Truck Body for Your Fleet
The right refrigerated truck body depends on four things: payload, route type, temperature range, and duty cycle (how many hours a day the fridge is running).
- Payload: a two-tonne body will be too small for a bulk florist run and too big for a courier drop route. Sizing the refrigerated truck body properly protects fuel economy and stops you paying for cooling capacity you don’t need.
- Route type: multi-drop deliveries mean the doors open often, so the refrigeration unit needs faster pull-down recovery. Long-haul runs are more forgiving on the unit but harder on insulation.
- Temperature range: chilled, frozen, or multi-temp changes both the body build and the unit spec.
- Duty cycle: a fridge running 12+ hours a day needs a heavier-duty compressor than one that only runs 4 hours on morning deliveries.
Tranzfreeze’s team walks through all four with every quote so the finished refrigerated truck body, and the refrigeration unit that goes with it, actually matches how the vehicle will work in the real world.

Refrigerated truck bodies come in almost any size, from compact two-pallet units for light-truck fleets through to 12-tonne pantech configurations. Tranzfreeze sizes each body to your payload, route type, and the base truck’s chassis rating, so you’re not carrying capacity you don’t need or running out of space on delivery day.
A typical refrigerated truck body build takes around two to four weeks from measure-up to handover, depending on body size, refrigeration unit spec, and any optional extras like electric standby or pallet skates. Complex multi-temp fit-outs may take a little longer.
Yes. Most of our work is fitting refrigerated truck bodies to trucks our customers already own or have just purchased. Tranzfreeze handles the entire process, from removing an old body if needed, through to full installation and commissioning of the new refrigerated truck body and refrigeration unit.
A refrigerated truck body is fitted to a truck chassis (typically 3-tonne and above), sitting separately from the cab. A fridge van is a full van conversion, with the insulated cargo area behind the cab as part of one integrated body. Truck bodies suit larger payloads and multi-pallet loads; fridge vans work best for smaller multi-drop delivery routes.
